May 31, 2009 – Maple Grove Stuff to Know

PENTECOST
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19)

INSTRUCTIONS FROM HEBREWS
The book of Hebrews is full of instructions to guide us in our walk with Jesus. Last week Hebrews 4:14-16 challenged us to hang in there during difficult moments.
This week we consider Hebrews 5:11 – 6:12. In moments of impressive immaturity, did anyone ever tell you to “grow up!”? It would be tragic if our children never grew up. It would be terrible if despite years of school, your children never learned anything. It would be disastrous if your gardens and farm fields never produced a crop, even though you planted good seeds and plants. How much more tragic it is, if believers in Jesus never mature in the faith. Today we are instructed to “go on to maturity” (6:1).
Today is Pentecost. God sent the Holy Spirit to the church aid in the believer’s spiritual maturity. God’s Spirit helps us remember and understand Jesus’ words (John 14:15-27), aids us in our devotional lives (John 16:13), and enables us to continue the ministry given to Jesus (Luke 4:16-21). God’s Spirit is necessary for us to grow up in the faith.

May 24, 2009 – Opportunities of the Week

“Be on guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:13-14)

Instructions for the Christian life from the Book of Hebrews
The book of Hebrews is full of instructions to guide us in our walk with Jesus. Last week Hebrews 3:1-14 challenged us to focus our minds on Jesus all the time.
This week we consider Hebrews 4:14-16. “When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.” There are times when all of us feel like we are “at the end of our ropes.” Where is God at these times? God hasn’t moved, maybe we have – to the end of our ropes. Today we learn that God is approachable. In fact we are urged to confidently approach God. We can do this because of Jesus, who leads us directly to God. When we get close to God, we find mercy and grace when we are hanging on. We are encouraged to Hang In There!

May 10, 2009 – Opportunities of the Week

“I will listen to what God the Lord will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints – but let them not return to folly.” (Psalm 85:8)

Instructions for the Christian life from the Book of Hebrews
The book of Hebrews is full of instructions to guide us in our walk with Jesus. Two weeks ago we considered Hebrews 4:1-11. We talked about God’s rest, which is eternal, but also every day. We learned that we should, be careful not to fall short of the promise of entering God’s rest (4:1), and also, to make every effort to enter God’s rest (4:11).
This week we consider Hebrews 2:1-4. We are instructed to pay careful attention to the message that God has for us (2:1). This message is the gospel, which means “good news.” We pay attention to many things in this world, these things can cause us to drift away from the good news that God has for us.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING – MAY 17, 6:30 PM
Our quarterly congregational meeting will include an up-date from the Finance, Personnel and Property Commission; an affirmation ballot to fill a vacancy on the Worship & Service Commission; and a discussions and affirmation of the associate pastor position. 100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Were you married between 1950 and 1979? Your wedding photo should be on the bulletin board. We will make a copy for you; see Cathy Case or RuthAnn Bruner.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS!
Do you like to doodle? Can you express your Christian faith in a drawing? Starting in June we will create our own covers for the Sunday church news bulletins. We would like to have different pictures each week. Ideally, pictures should be black and white and about 4 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Larger artwork will be scanned and reduced to fit. Computer generated artwork is acceptable. Color drawings will be considered, but because of high costs of printing in color, we will only run them occasionally. Submit your artwork to Pastor Steve.
