LOOKING BACK AT VBS
In 1945 Maple Grove Mennonite held its first Summer Bible School (now called Vacation Bible School). Records are sketchy for the Summer Bible School Committee, but the results are notable. Summer Bible School was a means of mission and outreach. Even before there was a permanent committee, Summer Bible School was held at the Coatesville mission in 1934 with about 200 participating.

Over the years the Summer Bible School Committee worked with the Maple Grove Missions Committee to help establish new congregations and mission outreaches. For example, in 1953 Summer Bible Schools were held at Maple Grove and eight mission stations with a total enrollment over 1300.

Who would have thought that the VBS vision would persevere for this many years? The details, themes and style of VBS have changed over the years, but one thing remains the same. We have a strong desire to reach out to the children in our area with the Gospel message. Pray that the Lord will bless the 64th Annual Maple Grove Mennonite Church VBS.

CHILDREN’S DAY – Directed by Cathy King
Our worship service on June 8 will be a different service because we are honoring the children of our church and their parents. This service was planned to help us all appreciate them and develop a passion for their spiritual growth. As you look at them may you feel the importance of interacting with them. I pray that many of you will feel the call to help in the children’s ministries that take place every Sunday. We need help, especially in the Primary Department. Let Denyce Copeland know of your willingness to help. Thank you – for Christ and His little ones, Cathy King.

CHRISTIAN SYMPATHY
We extend our sympathy and prayers to Mike & Chrissy Weaver. Chrisy’s Father, Pastor Chuck McCulloh entered God’s Eternal Kingdom on Saturday, May 31. Maple Grove had a good representation at the funeral on June 4.

We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Sarah Smoker, who was laid to rest on Thursday, June 5. Sarah is the sister-in-law of Naomi Stoltzfus.

EDUCATION AND INSPIRATION OPPORTUNITIES

BAPTISM INSTRUCTION CLASS
The Jewish people at the time of Jesus knew all about baptism. Archaeologists continually find the remains of baptismal pools (called mikvah) all over Israel that were in use at the time Jesus walked the earth. On the southern end of the Temple mount in Jerusalem there was a large complex of baptismal pools. Anyone who wanted to go to the Temple had to be baptized before they could climb the steps up to the Temple. Baptism represented that your sins were washed away.
Jesus’ followers were baptized when they made a decision to become disciples. They needed to repent of their sins, ask God’s forgiveness and be baptized as part of the process to follow Jesus. The Jewish people had to be baptized every time they wanted to get close to God (the Temple); Jesus’ followers generally were only baptized once as a sign that they made a life changing decision to follow Jesus forever. The Apostle Paul tells us that there is “one Lord, one faith, one baptism” for followers of Jesus.
We will have a baptism on August 24. Instruction Classes begin the week after VBS. Please contact Pastor Steve if you are interested in finding out more about baptism and the Christian faith or are interested in being baptized.
