LOOKING BACK
Sunday School is important! Maple Grove began as a Sunday School outreach of the Millwood Mennonite Church. 102 YEARS AGO, on March 25, 1906 a Sunday School was organized in the Sadsbury Friends Meeting House on Simontown Road. Vernon Kennel wrote “There was quite a lot of opposition from all sides, but by all the reverses the work seemed to gradually prosper.” John A. Kennel was the first Superintendent; Amos K. Mast, Assistant Superintendent; and John K. Mast, Secretary. The ministry continued to grow; we outgrew the Friends Meeting House which led to the construction of our own meeting house in 1909.

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE

LOOKING BACK
Sharing the Lord’s Supper and Foot Washing has been an important part of Maple Grove’s tradition since the beginning. Almost 89 YEARS AGO on April 27, 1919 the first communion service was held at Maple Grove. Normally communion was celebrated only at the Millwood church, but the Millwood church building was closed for 10 weeks for remodeling. John A. Kennel led worship and John S. Mast preached on “Christ’s Sufferings.” It must have been a wonderful acknowledgement of God’s presence through times of suffering. During the fall of 1918 all the churches were closed, along with all schools and public gatherings, because of the worldwide influenza epidemic. 36 thousand died from the flu in Pennsylvania; the stones in our cemetery attest to the fact that our church was deeply affected by the epidemic.

COMMUNION AND FOOT WASHING, Sunday, March 16
Jesus shared intimate moments with his disciples. During his final meal with them and just before his arrest, trial and crucifixion, Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and instituted the Lord’s Supper. Jesus wanted to demonstrate his self-sacrificing love and the attitude of servanthood he had towards us and that we should have for each other. As Jesus’ disciples today we share in the same tradition that has been passed down by Jesus’ disciples through the generations.
How can we prepare?
-Spend time in prayer and mediation (Colossians 4:2)
-Read through the related passages (Luke 22:7-20; John 13:1-17; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34).
-Confess your sins to the Lord (1 John 1:9).
-Seek to restore your broken relationships with others. (1 Peter 3:8).
