Tuesday, November 4, 7:00 pm
Rebecca Zurbrick will speak about her call to mission. Rebecca is appointed by the Bible Fellowship Church Board of Missions for ministry with CAM International. She plans to leave for Uruguay in January and eventually go to Spain. Come hear her story.

A HEALTHY CHURCH
We want to be a healthy church; Jesus deserves a strong and healthy body. Today we consider our relationship with people who aren’t Christians. As we get to know them, we find that they have needs: maybe food and shelter, maybe love and caring, perhaps a friend to talk with. Certainly they need forgiveness and salvation. Some people we come into contact with are disagreeable or just plain mean. We need to love them. Once we too were “enemies” of God (Colossians 1:21), but God loves us and showed that love through Jesus. We need to be Christ-like, seeking and saving the lost. Characteristic of a Healthy Church #7: A healthy church has need-oriented evangelism.

LOOKING BACK
The church is just people. This has been evident throughout Maple Grove history. The “Maple Breezes” was a newsletter published from May 1953 into the 1990s. Some can remember getting together to type the stencils and turn the crank on the mimeograph machine.

55 years ago, the October 1953 issue reported that Sewing Circle was held at Elam Shenk’s home. Emmanuel Peachey held revival services. A shower was held for Glenda and Leon Mast at the Amos Mast home. Willis and Blanche Umble reported on their Minnesota trip to teach Bible School. Ray Glick made a plea to the youth to enter Voluntary Service. Lila Hess cared for little Billy Stoltzfus during his mother’s illness. Violet Fisher, in Grade 7 at West Fallowfield School, wrote about her substitute teacher, Don Mast, who was filling in while Miss Frey was making wedding preparations. Gid and Ruth Stoltzfus wrote about Ruth’s miraculous healing in an article “God Answers Prayer.”

The Sewing Circle still meets; God’s people still care for and encourage one another; Bible Schools are still taught; God still heals. The church still is just people like you and me, doing their best to be God’s people in this world.

WE WELCOME “Calli Ann King” to this world, born on October 11, 2008. Matt & Missy King are the proud parents. Congratualtions!

MAPLE GROVE CONCERT SERIES

Come join us on October 12 at 6:30 pm for a Concert

Broken Vessels and Mindy Boyd will be here

Maple Grove Mennonite Church, 549 Swan Road, Atglen, PA

Broken Vessels: Joined together on a worship team, this group of friends discovered a unique blend of harmony and an incredible joy in singing together.
The name “Broken Vessels” was chosen as a reminder; sort of a checklist, for each member of the group. Their desire is to be broken before God; able to be used as a vessel to share Christ with others.
The group has enjoyed singing in competitions, conventions and local churches (Music in the Meadow); but their greatest love is simply meeting God’s family all over the place!
“The greatest encouragement we have is to watch God open doors for us to meet another branch of His family. It is our passion to thank God publicly for His gifts of salvation, to live lives that are authentic and to encourage others to find Him”

Mindy Boyd is a songwriter, and has been writing her own music since the age of 6. As a little girl on a swing in her front yard, she would sing her thoughts and feelings about life, family, nature, and God.

Now as an adult, she continues to express her thoughts and feelings about these things in a style that both captivates the listener and conveys the emotions of her heart. Her years of experience, both in leading worship and performing on-stage, have given her the ability to communicate in a way that is natural and easy to relate to.

Authenticity and vulnerability are what she strives for in her music, and when listening to Mindy sing, you quickly realize that you have been invited into the most candid entries of her journal.

The invitations she has received have given her opportunities to share her music nationally, as well as internationally in countries such as Germany, Hungary, Bolivia, and Hong Kong. Her most recent album, Coming Home, was was released in October 2006.

“God is Spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth” John 4:24

A HEALTHY CHURCH
We want to be a healthy church; Jesus deserves a strong and healthy body. Last week we considered the need for a church structure that is functional for ministry. This week we consider the way we worship. Jesus calls us to worship in Spirit and in Truth (John 4:23). Our worship should reflect our spiritual commitment to our Lord and His Kingdom.
The Eight Characteristics of a Healthy Church (from Natural Church Development):
A healthy church has leadership that empowers the members for ministry.
In a healthy church Christians serve in their area of giftedness.
A healthy church has passionate spirituality.
A healthy church has functional structures.
A healthy church has inspiring worship services.
A healthy church has holistic small groups.
A healthy church has need-oriented evangelism
A healthy church has loving relationships

ANNUAL MEETING OF THE CONGREGATION
Thank you to all who attended our Annual Meeting last week. We give a special thanks to RuthAnn Bruner for preparing the Annual Report booklet and to the Elders for leading the meeting. A new Women’s Ministry Commission was affirmed and Melba King was affirmed as Chair of the Centennial Celebration Committee. All affirmations were unanimous. The Leadership Team presented some minor changes to our By-laws; these will be presented in written form and affirmed at a future congregational meeting.

COMMUNION SUNDAY IS OCOTBER 12
Communion is a time to renew our commitment to love God and love others. We remember and receive the symbols of Jesus’ death to help renew our spiritual lives and we wash each other’s feet because Jesus washed his disciples and as a reminder that we are called to a humble community of faith.
How can you prepare your hearts and minds? The scripture tells us that we should receive communion in a worthy manner and each person should “examine himself” (1 Cor 11:27-28).
* Spend some time each day this week reading Scripture, praying and evaluating your life.
* Ask forgiveness for the things you thought and did, that offended God.
* If you have offended or hurt another person, seek them out and ask forgiveness and offer to make it good.

A HEALTHY CHURCH
A church is a group of Christians committed to working together for the common goal of serving Christ. Church health begins when members are both spiritually healthy and committed to working together. The Apostle Paul wrote, “You are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:27) Jesus deserves a strong and healthy body.
Today we continue to evaluate our spiritual passion. We need to keep our spiritual passion high as we wait for the Lord’s return. Are we “on fire” for the Lord? “Let your light shine before me, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
The first three Characteristics of a Healthy Church (from Natural Church Development):
1. A healthy church has leadership that empowers the members for ministry.
2. In a healthy church Christians serve in their area of giftedness.
3. A healthy church has passionate spirituality.

LOOKING BACK – LOOKING AHEAD
One year ago, on September 9, we dedicated the new addition of our building. The Lord has certainly blessed us with facilities useful for the Kingdom of God. We pray that this building may be a used for the benefit of humanity and the glory of God. Every time we enter, we should renew the words of dedication: “We set apart this house for the worship of the true and Living God and the service of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through the guidance of the Holy Spirit.”
Next year we will celebrate 100 years of service to our Lord in this place.
